Job Title: Temporary Art Instructor

Reports to: Director

Status: Temporary—1 Year Assignment, Non-exempt

Hiring Range: $15.00-$18.00 per hour

Hours/Week: 15-29, as agreed upon hire; weekday, evening, and weekend hours

SUMMARY

The art instructor will be responsible for providing, for one year, art instruction to library patrons who sign up for art classes provided primarily at Cicero Library. Persons registering for classes will be children (K-5), young adults, and adults. Individual art classes, or series of classes, will be designed for a particular age group, though some classes may be designed for the entire family.

The art instructor will be responsible for developing in library patrons an interest in, and the ability for, creative expression in the visual arts, with great emphasis on drawing and painting, using various techniques.

The instructor’s mission is to discover and develop the talents of library patrons in the field of visual art. The art instructor shall design and execute art classes that are fun, educational, and enriching for library patrons who will, collectively, possess a wide range of natural aptitudes and previously acquired skill.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES—All or some of the following will be performed:

1. Teach hands-on art instruction, with great emphasis on drawing and painting.

2. Apply professional standards for visual arts educators created by the National Art Education Association (NAEA).

3. Provide art instruction through which library patrons develop a sense of aesthetics, artistic appreciation, and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.

4. Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing and painting.

5. Understand a variety of “studio” techniques.

6. Teach elements and principles of art and design.

7. In conjunction with direct supervisor, develop schedule of art classes.

8. Prepare a monthly report summarizing art instruction activities and events.

9. Follow Library policies and procedures.

10. Work with the Marketing Specialist on the creation of marketing content for art classes.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

Experience teaching art, particularly drawing and painting, using various techniques to children, young adults, and adults.

The ideal candidate will possess an Indiana Teacher’s License in Art Education, though this temporary position may be ideal for a current student of Art Education. This position may serve as a paid internship for a current art education student.

DRIVERS LICENSE AND TRANSPORTATION

Valid driver’s license and personal transportation available for job-related assignments are required.
