Job Title: Library Aide

Status: Part-time, Nonexempt (hourly) Starting: $10.75/hour

Hours/Week: Approximately 20 hours each week on a rotating schedule:

Week 1: M:10-2, T:130-530, W:130-530, R: 130-530 F:1-5

Week 2: M:10-2, T:130-530, W: 130-530 R:130-530, S:10-2

Description

Assists customers in the circulation and location of materials and information in a friendly and welcoming manner. Keeps materials organized on shelves according to library procedures.

  • Check materials in and out.
  • Search collection for overdue and missing materials.
  • Answers the telephone; answers questions appropriate to skill level; relays messages to appropriate individuals.
  • Performs holds management – including hold list and hold shelf maintenance.
  • Assists patrons with routine location questions - referring patrons to other staff members as needed; assists patrons to look up materials on the computer and instructs patrons in the use of the library equipment. Assists patrons in placing holds.
  • Collect fines and provide appropriate change. May accept donations and issue donation receipts.
  • Operates standard library equipment such as copiers, cash register and integrated library system.
  • Inspect returned items for damage.
  • Register new patrons and update existing patron accounts.
  • Shelve library materials. Shelf-reads, weeds, and shifts materials as needed.
  • Assist with inventory of collection
  • Perform various opening and closing procedures.
  • This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

  • Readily adapt to change; be a team player; work with details and people simultaneously.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE--High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience. Prefer knowledge and/or prior experience in the following areas: customer service; filing; organization (arrangement); resolving customer complaints; working on a team; and working with computer hardware and software. Experience with MS Word and Excel is a must.


Job Title: Youth Services Department Manager

Status: Full-time, Non-exempt Starting: $17.50; based on experience Hours/Week: 40

Description

Oversees operations of the Youth Services Department. Creates, implements, and presents library programs, activities, and events for children and young adults, ages 0-18, and related programs for parents, caregivers, and teachers. Provides reference and reader’s advisory services and interprets the Library’s policies and procedures. Is responsible for the physical appearance of the Youth Services areas. Is responsible for developing and maintaining Youth Services materials. Reports to the Library Director. Certification required by the State of Indiana will be paid for by the employee.

  • Plans and conducts programs for children and young adults to encourage reading, viewing, and listening of library materials to create lifelong readers and learners.
  • Evaluates and selects materials of interest to children and young adults for purchase by the library.
  • Performs reference and reader’s advisory services in person, by telephone, and by e-mail, using materials in a variety of formats primarily for the Youth Services Department.
  • Assists with Circulation and general operations of the library, as needed.
  • Provides service to the community and schools through programming, teacher collection services, and other Library services.
  • Works weekday, evening, and weekend hours, as needed.
  • Supervises the work performed by other staff members and volunteers in the Youth Services areas.
  • Interprets the Library’s policies and procedures to the public in a customer- friendly manner.
  • Uses computers and the Internet effectively for providing Library service.
  • Stays abreast of reading and programming trends for children and young adults.
  • Creates displays to promote reading and the use of the Youth Services collections and services.
  • Attends workshops, conferences, and meetings and reads professional literature to stay current in the field.
  •  Serves on committees, as requested, to enhance the profession.
  • Assists patrons in the use of the online catalog and other electronic tools.
  • Develops reading lists and library user guides.
  • Prepares the monthly Youth Services Department Report. Attends Library staff meetings.
  • Follows Library policies and procedures.
  • Contributes Youth Services content for the library website and newsletters.
  • Works with the Marketing Specialist on the creation of Youth Services marketing content.
  • Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the library.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

An ALA accredited MLS is required.

Prefer knowledge and/or prior experience in the following areas: management of budgets and personnel; customer service; youth services program planning and evaluation; project management; collection development for children and teens; and childhood and young adult development.

DRIVERS LICENSE AND TRANSPORTATION

Valid driver’s license and personal transportation available for job-related assignments required.

SCHEDULE

40 hours per week, weekdays, evenings, and Saturdays. Is occasionally called in when emergencies arise.
